With The Home Depot acquisition of The Company Store, December 19, 2017, they've decided to pull the package insert program from the market. TSW recommends Plow & Hearth Package insert Program as a great alternative.
Art Tuesday - Dubiousness
Art Tuesday - Texas in a Nutshell
It is Art Tuesday, and this week we are celebrating the launch of our Houston office, and our SXSW sponsorship on Thursday. Music, books, hats and longhorns are all "de rigueur" in Texas, but there is something even more quintessentially Texan. A pair of blue jeans on a barbed wire fence. We are fortunate to have this image evoking the spirit of Texas by Bob Calbert. His amazing ability to capture a moment in time, and a feeling of both comfort an belonging resonate well with us here at TSWUS. The fact that he also often shoots in black and white makes it even better!
We welcome the Lonestar State team to the fold with open arms, and can't wait to see how the adventure unfolds as we "Go West Young Man".
Art Tuesday: Making Art & Making Friends
I'd Beavery happy to help you.
Beavers are in the Creative and caring quadrant. They like to see the big picture, are imaginative, forward-thinking, organized, and hard working - occasionally Beavers neglect themselves in favor of being helpful, so they need looking after.
We will be looking after our newest Beaver closely. Artist Jon Deuschele from Zimbabwe was in the area and available to create this beautifully simple interpretation. Having never before seen this North American flat tailed semi-aquatic mammal, I think he captured it perfectly. Thank you Jon. Hop over to Instagram for a look @jondeuschle
Art Tuesdays - Goodbye for now
The last time I wrote plainly as my true self I was here to say hello. Now I am here to say goodbye. My months in Atlanta have been a blast. The people in this city are vibrant, energetic, and incredibly friendly. Whether its the diversity of Ponce City Market, the authenticity of the Old Fourth Ward, or the luxury of Buckhead, the ATL has a niche for everyone. My time at TSW US has been incredibly powerful. In addition to immersing myself in the brands of our clients, I was able to meet some wonderful people in the media industry and expand my understanding of print advertising. This would not have been possible without the support of the entire office. So to a city and people I can not wait to revisit, adios Atlanta!
Art Tuesday: Gifts and Gimbap
It is Art Tuesday at The Specialist Works US and today we are highlighting abstract art from a local artist. Some time ago, a Korean restaurant where I used to frequently eat closed down, and being a regular they decided to leave one of their paintings with me. It was created by the owner's daughter, and we love the way the that the broad pastel brushstrokes blend into each other, weaving over and under its neighbors to create a rich, deeply textured canvas.
The restaurant sold food, and we sell advertising, but both of our businesses are enriched by the presence of this painting. Our team at TSWUS comes from a wide range of disciplines, with backgrounds in psychology, art, politics, tech, marketing, and hospitality. We have all tried our hands in different careers and businesses - some of which, like the restaurant, are now closed and a part of the past. But we are individuals who are adaptive and creative, so we adapted and created new chapters. Stay sunny and keep an eye on the big picture! As you can see here, it is actually massive (Chick-fil-A Pez dispenser shown for scale).
Art Tuesday - Aubrey Beardsley
Art Tuesday - Still Life
Life can get cluttered sometimes, and at TSWUS we ended last week busy and started this week the same. But the important thing is to keep chipping away at the heap, to constantly count your blessings, and to stay focused. Whether it’s moving to the Big Apple or reinventing the apple pie, the future looks fruitful. We can’t wait to sink our teeth in!
Art Tuesday - Silliness and Balance
It is Art Tuesday at The Specialist Works US and today we are embracing fun. In a recent trip to New Orleans, we acquired this piece of art that exemplifies just that. Often in life, we over think the things that are unimportant, and fail to embrace the short snippets of fun that are intended to jostle us along in our day. This painting on board (Masonite if we can be candid) is a mix of thoughtfulness and of silliness. Just the right mix for a full day that allows a person to embrace the need to be focused, and the need to let go. Balance has a habit of creating productivity. At TSWUS as serious as we are about business, we intend that every day has an element of silliness, and that every day we each laugh and leave here with a smile of either satisfaction or of fondness. The name of this painting is Giggly Cigarette Girl. Can’t get any better than that – Can it?
Art Tuesday - Lino Cuts
Art Tuesday - The Summer Solstice
Seasons are thieves, but they are also times of rebirth, change, and in all of their power there is stark beauty. The change into summer from spring is much like our recent change to being part of a larger business family - very full of light.
To celebrate this "brightest" day of the year, we have selected our sunniest art piece for Art Tuesday. This pottery piece is on the verge of kitsch, and stretches our concept of Art, but the ruddiness of the clay made us love it for its tactile character. Shine On!
Art Tuesday - Walking House by Lee Laney
Art Tuesday Wise Owl
We are hoping it inspires "wisdom" throughout the day. If not, at least we will have something interesting to look at rather than the commercially produced "art" in most office spaces.
We may be clinging to individuality by a thin thread, but for as long as the thread holds we'll do our part! Thanks you to all of you artists that help us hang on by expressing yourselves.
Art Tuesday the Ides of March
William Shakespeare
The Ides of March is a day on the Roman calendar that corresponds to March 15th. It became notorious as the date of the assassination of Julius Caesar.
Today is March 15th, but it is also Art Tuesday at Elarbee Media, and we found a suitably "soothsayer" styled offering from our recent business visit to New Orleans.
This painting on board is one of two in the series. The second piece is retained by the artist in his personal collection. In spending time with him, he told me it had been "offered" for some time, but no one was interested in it.
Odd. It haunted us immediately, which is how it ought to be. We now have a new nickname for this painting in the office. "Ides".
Art Tuesday Perspective Checking
It is Art Tuesday at Elarbee Media and today we are focused on perspective. We are not speaking of artistic meaning of the word, but in terms of “changing” ours.
This Howard Finster-esque picture is by Colette (7). It was only natural for her to see a board with blue-green paint on it and assume it was a “canvas”. It was an ocean ready to be filled with fish. What it was, in fact, was a test board to choose a front door color for a beach rental property.
How you look at something determines its value to you, as well as how you approach and employ it. Having children around can often impart some of the most important lessons, ones we had learned long ago but forgotten,
In our business lives, change is a constant. Being able to see that change as a canvas ready to be painted is a valuable skill, and one we needed to be reminded to employ.
Art-Tuesday - Haunting Art
Art speaks to us. When we hear but fail to listen, it often haunts us. We are not talking about “decorative” Art, but of the soul sharing, emotionally explicit variety of Art. It is the kind of Art that makes you uncomfortable.
When something speaks to you and you walk away have you lost out or does the haunting mean as much as the initial experience? Does being memorable have as much value as being present?
For advertisers, is the message and imagery that stays with people more important than continued exposure?
Art Tuesday Color Juxtaposition
It is Art Tuesday at Elarbee Media and today we are featuring a small piece in our favorite vivid red by Shelly Leitheiser. Her work appeals to us for both its color and imagery. Art gives you the freedom to express yourself outside of what is literally visible. In this picture, we are compelled by the juxtaposition of color with subject matter. The full blown red color as a background for penguins is a surprise. The common theme of putting penguins in cold, blue and white settings where they naturally reside is turned on its head in this work we have nicknamed “Penguin Inferno”.
What appeals about Penguin Inferno, is the complete departure from what is expected. In this case departure is achieved through color. Can changing advertising color backgrounds have the same impact? Would having the unexpected as a part of the visual experience enhance or retard response to an offer? Playing with color in art is intrinsic. Playing with color in advertising is risky. Sometimes. Risk and reward go hand in hand. Be bold in testing, but do it in small controlled quantities.
Always be bold in expressing yourself through Art.
Art Tuesday Organic Growth
It is Art Tuesday at Elarbee Media and today we are featuring a piece titles Morris Green. Outside of our normal buying patterns, this piece appealed to us with its Organic pattern and coloring. Nature and grounding are both excellent visual triggers for this new year.
In thinking about Organic, we can help address the issue of customer growth. Should marketing departments be focused on Organic Growth, or New Customer Acquisition? Doubling your existing client’s AOV (Average Order Value) can be as significant and at the same time considerably less costly than acquiring new customers. While the goal is to gain market-share; sometimes, focusing internally can accomplish that goal as effectively as outbound efforts. Organic is awesome.
Art Tuesday Pink is the New Autumn
It is Art Tuesday at Elarbee Media and this week we are working on Canadian Media profiles, so we thought we would highlight this Autumnal maple leaf impression on tissue.
Donated to the office by Colette, Age 6, it adds cheery color on some rainy and cold days without robbing itself of the feeling of the season.
Pink is the new Autumn! On a serious note, often stepping back and viewing a problem or project through a different lens can lead to spectacular results.
Art Tuesday Effervescence
It is Art Tuesday at Elarbee Media, and today's Art is by Shelly Leitheiser. When we look at this piece, we see effervescence. The bubbling up of energy and color. It suggests movement and life in Art that is only really color.
Impressions made through shape and color can dramatically impact the feeling evoked by an image. When advertisers choose the wrong colors and shapes, they are sending the wrong message before they even begin to speak about their products.
Being conscious of the impact made by both color and shape is crucial to delivering the intended message.
Art Tuesday - Comic Book Art
It is Art Tuesday at Elarbee Media, and we are highlighting a signed print that is out of our normal pattern. It boasts tremendous color and detail. The comic book artist, Shelton LeBron, gifted it to us and we love it.
The right hand side of the face is reminiscent of the King on a playing card. The left is an industrial interpretation of the same character.
We enjoy both the vibrancy and the detail in this piece, and have it hanging in our kitchen next to our own comic book art creation from Super Hero Day!
Long live the creative mind, and the generous spirit that would gift someone a piece of Art.
Art Tuesday - The Appeal of Rural Markets
It is Art Tuesday at Elarbee Media, and this week's feature is titled "Wired". It is a 3 X 4 dry-point etching by Lafayette, LA artist Bonnie Camos.
Weather it is dove or crows, the image of birds sitting on a telephone wire is evocative of driving through the rural landscape. Just looking at the picture makes you want to jump in a truck and take off to where there are fields on either side of the road.
The "romance" of a quiet country life has incredible appeal, and small triggers like this etching make it hard to resist.
Art Tuesday - Color in Advertising
It is Art Tuesday at Elarbee Media and we want to talk about color. We know that in advertising darker colors like green and blue are used to convey the feeling of stability. Favorites of financial institutions these "cool" colors are often also defined as masculine.
So what happens when you combine these stable, masculine colors with chaotic pattern, or with the freedom of no pattern?
Is a lack of control executed in blue jarring, whereas a lack of control in red is anticipated?
We found this blue piece by Shelly Leitheiser to be so organic in its appeal that we simply did not care, Not normally buyers of Blue art, we threw caution to the wind. Sometimes you have to get out of your comfort zone.

Art Tuesday Urbnpop Wood Burning
It is Art Tuesday at Elarbee Media and today we are excited to show you our newest addition from URBNPOP. This adorable horned and helmeted monster is a magnet. We haven't seen wood burning outside of the rustic country arena in so many years we were surprised when we encountered it here.
The combination of the wood burning with the monster subject matter strikes us as just wrong enough to be perfectly right!
Often the "off-kilter" is striking, and memorable. You don't have to scream to be heard. Sometimes you just have to whisper and be a little cheeky.
Cheers URBNPOP! Thanks for the gift. Urbnpop.com
Art Tuesday Shelton La Bron The Red 1
It is Art Tuesday at Elarbee Media and we are sharing a new acquisition which is a 4 X 4 finished sized wrapped canvas. This painting is, oddly enough, by a comic book artist Shelton La Bron. It is titled “The Red 1”. It is a highly detailed execution of a tree in autumn. The idea of a crisp cool autumn day is compelling during the hot summer heat of Atlanta.
Being attracted to an autumnal scene in summer begs the question, “How do seasonal swings impact product sales and the positioning of marketing?” While it is hard to sell sweaters in summer it is easy to sell ice cream. August is the highest grossing month for ice cream sales.
If you are an artist, break out your winter scenes and sell away before the weather turns.
Art Tuesday Artists Business Cards
It is Art Tuesday at Elarbee Media, and today we are posing a question. "How do artists see themselves?"
Often when you meet the artist behind a piece of work, it can be very surprising. They can be larger than life or surprisingly reserved despite what they will reveal through their craft.
Most intriguing is how they present themselves in their marketing. We think the business card for S.D. Meadows not only captures the spirit of the Art produced, but gives you a glimpse at the character of the man.
This is the best business card we have seen in quite a while (and we design a lot of them). It captures the character of the artist, but allows him to transact business as well.
Art Tuesday Nicolin and Suggestive Art
It is Art Tuesday at Elarbee Media, and this week we are featuring one of brighter pieces. This signed print is by Charlotte Nicolin, a Swedish born artist that we know from Montreal. Her art focuses on nature and the marine world. This picture is titled "The Kiss" , not to be confused with the Gutsav Klimt masterpiece.
It is playful, colorful and suggestive. We can't help thinking Rorschach, The provocative nature of the picture is not subtle, but it is offset by the addition of the kissing frogs.
Modern advertising campaigns tend to lack subtlety all together offering no offset, Does that lead to more engagement or better recall?
Art Tuesday Hanged Man Bat
It is Art Tuesday at Elarbee Media, and today we are continuing with our Bat theme. This picture is actually a Tarot card, the Hanged Man. We own the original of the "Six of Bones" (Pentacles) in this entirely wooden representation of the Tarot deck. All of the images come from nature.
We love the cheekiness of the Hanged Man being a bat, When artists make you smile with their wit, it is an extra bonus.
Art Tuesday Is it Art?
And the first rude sketch that the world had seen was joy to his mighty heart, till the Devil whispered behind the leaves 'It's pretty, but is it Art?' Rudyard Kipling
It is Art Tuesday at Elarbee Media and this week we thought we would have a bit of fun! Is it Art? What a great question. We ask that time and again within the office even after we have made a new purchase.
Is this Art? No. It is a cast iron mermaid wearing a pair of Monster High plastic shoes. It is the product of an unfettered 6 year old imagination which is even more beautiful than if it were "Art".
Art Tuesday "West" of El Segundo
It is Art Tuesday at Elarbee Media and we are in Texas traveling for business - which of course being Texas is also fun! SInce we are in longhorn country we thought we would take some time on Art Tuesday to highlight one of our favorite pieces of "Cow Art". We have several, but we love this black and white version of Robert Anschutz's " "West" of El Segundo".
Robert is known for his brilliant backdrops with huge color impact, but taking the work back to black and white shows the power of the image itself. Beautiful!
So happy to be back in Texas!
Art Tuesday Folk Art
It is Art Tuesday at Elarbee Media and we are in a folk art mood after our all-American long weekend. This Folk Art piece is reminiscent of the earlier tramp art, but has the addition of vibrant color and mementos. The Churchill Downs betting chit is marked 1970.
This piece hangs in our hallway and reminds us that crafty marketers of today's era would have an advertisement on the back of those tickets!
Art Tuesday Is a Doodle Art?
It is Art Tuesday at Elarbee Media and we have been posed the question “Is a doodle Art?”
“A doodle is a drawing made while a person's attention is otherwise occupied. Doodles are simple drawings that can have concrete representational meaning or may just be abstract shapes.” according to Wikipedia.
What differentiates the doodle is the “artist’s” focus of attention, not their execution. Our vote is that doodling is Art of one of the purest forms. The doodle often speaks form the subconscious rather than a conscious effort. It produces something more telling, that is far less controlled in its execution. To anyone who really believes in art, this is true beauty.
This doodle is from a business meeting on a back porch. Two people different styles, but not in conflict.
Art Tuesday Linoleum Block Print
It is Art Tuesday at Elarbee Media and we are excited to share a Linoleum Stamped Print from 1961. The Artists was Patricia Donohue. Created as a Christmas card on bonded cotton paper, this reindeer motif is created by craving out solid forms form a piece of linoleum. Linoleum Block Printing or Linocuts were very popular in the 1960’s. We are excited to showcase this today not only because we love the strong graphic imagery, but because it is a stamp, and we are absorbed in our stamp client Expressionery.com for Q3 and Q4 efforts right now so the tie in feels appropriate.
Art Tuesday - Brent Woodside Clarity of Image
It is Art Tuesday at Elarbee Media, and we are excited to share a black and white illustration by Brent Woodside. This image immediately resonated with us, because it is so reminiscent of the Rorschach prints we have been posting. While this is a clearly defined image of a “creature and rider”, it has style elements that we see in the inkblots.
Today’s Art Tuesday selection brings up a good point about fluid images. The lack of clarity in the image is a boon in the art piece. It sets a tone, and is suggestive of detail that is never executed. Can that type of messaging with images be successful in advertising? That is a harder sell. Clarity of message is key to successful campaigns, and IMAGE is a significant part of that messaging.
Art Tuesday Quote Obsessed
It is Art Tuesday at Elarbee Media and today we wanted to highlight this new piece we bought on a whim at the farmer’s market. It is a fortune cookie with a quote coming out of it. Is it Art? Yes, but to a greater degree the “quote” is what compels the purchase.
From social media posts, to ad campaigns, America has become “quote obsessed”. T-shirts, mugs, e-cards, pillows, and tote bags are all emblazoned with our deepest inner thoughts.
As an advertiser, coming up with a catchy tag line can be golden. The resonance of your message can create a buzz, and grass roots adoption beyond anything your ad spend could generate. Here are a few of our favorites that have caught on and been adopted.

Art Tuesday SImple Pictures
this mixed media piece combines, color wax and nails on a wood. The extremely primitive drawing is childlike in its simplicity, but manages to evoke the calmness of a sunny day at the beach. We love the three nails that stick up out of the board about a 1/4 of an inch. Cheeky! Just like us.
Art Tuesday Bold Red Gold
In advertising, color can catch the eye and hold attention long enough to push the message. Be Bold, but be appropriate.
Art Tuesday Trees without Leaves
It's Art Tuesday at Elarbee Media. This painting on board is one of many we have in the office of trees without their leaves. In fact we walked around and counted four of them. One is an oil, two are acrylics and one is a pastel. Do we keep buying the same thing because the imagery resonates with us? Perhaps. In advertising, is that also what compels us to buy? Imagery is a powerful tool in motivating emotionally driven decisions, but it can also impact your choice of laundry detergent. What imagery has recently made you consider making a purchase? Was it a product you didn't really need? Share with us!

Art Tuesday Donne Moi ta Bouche
“Never drop your gun to hug a grizzly.” - Old West Proverb
Literally translated “Donne moi ta bouche” is “Give me your mouth”, just in case you were curious.
Art Tuesday Black and White Warriors
The stark contrast of the heavy black ink on the white paper (now slightly yellowed) is powerful, and reminiscent of a Rorschach Test. Its simplicity begs the question – “When is less actually more?”
In advertising, we forget that simplicity sells. Ads are crammed with disclaimers, arrows, details and numbers; so much so that it can be hard to figure out what is being offered. Is the answer, clean, simple, stark but solid presentation as in “Warriors”. I think it is certainly worth a test.
Art Tuesday Breaux and the Power of Red
For advertisers, Red is a very powerful and impacting color - as seen in this small execution, it can take over, or drive home the point. It is all in how it is used.

Art Tuesday We Love Texas
We do indeed love Texas! We love the gift so much, we have decided to celebrate today as Texas Tuesday!
Art Tuesday Tree Frog and Kissing Princes
In business, we kiss a lot of frogs when engaging new clients and prospects. Not all client relationships end up being purposeful or profitable; but we keep trying. We have happily found a few princes that we are proud to call clients.
Thanks to all of you "princes" for your support and continued relationship with Elarbee Media.
Art Tuesday Farewell to Our Old Office Themes
We are excited to announce that we will be upgrading our space and expanding our offices at the first of the year. Before we leave here, I will be posting "Farewell office!" shots of each of the different color schemes.
Moving is an adventure, and always an opportunity for growth as well as editing. We cannot wait!
Art Tuesday Pirate Turkey
At Elarbee Media, we are thankful for these small treasures!
Art Tuesday Leaves and the Power of Color
In advertising, color also makes a huge impact on response. Focused color to enhance the call to action and overall color to stand out in a crowded media space are devices of the direct response creative professional. The use of color does create a “feel”, and can also impact brand resonance. Before you jump in with both feet make sure your color choice and placement are tailored to your audience. Focus groups, and small circulation test cells are a must before you align yourself with a particular color. Always keep in mind that there are tones within the colors too. Red is not Red is not Red.
